Oral Sedation Dentistry Regulations
North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners Rule §21 NCAC 16Q .0301(i)(1) requires a dentist to complete at least 24 hours of instructive classroom training, document 3 live patient experiences, and obtain a permit before administering Moderate oral sedation to their adult patients.*
*In-office minimal sedation requires an 18-hour permit. Single- dose anxiolysis by prescription, with or without nitrous, does not require a permit. Grandfathering is also authorized for obtaining a permit.
DOCS Education’s 'Oral Sedation Dentistry' course is approved by the North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners as a program that meets the classroom training (didactic) requirement for a minimal or limited moderate conscious sedation permit.**
**Board-approval in no way constitutes endorsement.
Permit Renewal Requirements (Oral and IV): Six (6) hours every two (2) years, but renew every one (1) year when renewing license (i.e. by March 31st) ACLS qualifies for renewal.
