Oral Sedation Dentistry Regulations
Effective June 1, 2011: Texas State Board of Dental Examiners Rule §110.5 requires dentists to complete a 24-hour accredited training course, document 3 live patient cases, and obtain a Level 2 permit before providing their patients with moderate sedation using oral sedatives.*
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification or board-approved airway management training is also required.
*DOCS Education's 3-day "Oral Sedation Dentistry" course was approved for the Level 2 permit on November 20, 2015. When the intent is Level 1 minimal sedation with a single oral sedative (with or without nitrous), a 16-hour course is required.
